Metal embossing workshop

It's been a while since I've taught a metal embossing workshop or even played with metal, so this was so much fun. These ladies were very creative and totally inspired me. We had a busy day learning a variety of ways to emboss on metal and they each made a very unique piece by the end of the day. Metal is always a difficult thing to photograph and these do not do them justice but you'll get the idea.

I really should bring my metal out to play more often. Just need a few more hours in each day.

Metal embossed doodles

I had a small group for the Metal Embossed Doodles class last weekend but it was great fun and so inspiring for me as usual. Since it was a smaller than usual class I was able to teach a few more techniques than I usually do for this workshop. So in the final creations they used some free-form designs and some molds. Here are a couple of the finished pieces.

Metal embossing with teens.

The Ottawa Catholic School Board has a great program, that each spring brings together local artist with students from grade 7 to 12 to try new types of art that would other wise be hard to bring into the schools. For me it means sharing my love of metal embossing to a great group of creative teens. I'm always inspired by the designs they create.

Unfortunately I didn't managed to get a photo of everyone's finished piece but you can see how wonderful they were from the ones I did get.

2013 update

I realized recently that there was a few exciting things that happened to me in 2013 that I hadn't shared with you here yet. So I thought I'd share them over the next few post. If you like me on facebook you may have seen or heard a bit about them already.

Early in the year a student that had taken my metal embossing book workshop asked if I would be interested in making a wedding guest book for her son's wedding in November. It wasn't hard to agree to make it since I love metal embossing and I'm always up for a new challenge. Although I'd made a few metal covered books I'd never done a wedding guest book so I did a little researching on different kinds of books and what kind of pages are used and such. It was interesting to see the array of different variations on guest books being made now. For the most part though my customer gave me a good idea as to what she wanted. Since it was going to Texas it needed to be larger than life, but since the metal only comes as large as 9" by 11" the book could only be 8" by 10" to be all metal covered. So this is the size we agreed on. Still larger than your average guest book. The outer covers were to be tan and the inside covers needed to have some purple in. And of course it was to be metal embossed like I do my usual books. So I was off to a good start. After finding just the right paper for the inside covers and pages and a lot of hours of embossing, the book finally came together. I was pretty pleased with the end result and found a little extra time and paper to make a box for this keepsake book.

Inside box, all wrapped in dragonfly's of course.

Looking back at the year I think this was my favourite project that I did. So glad that it worked out and they liked it.

Back to high school with metal embossing.

I had the wonderful experience of teaching metal embossing for 3 days at St. Matthew High in Orleans/Ottawa earlier this month and wanted to share with you some of the amazing work the students did. They ranged from grade 7 to grade 12.  It's so interesting to see the designs that this age creates. Many of them used their own images and designs. Unfortunately I didn't get  photo's of all the work but these will give you an idea of just how great they were.

Doesn't it just  make you want to get your metal out and play? Well I wish I could but I better get back to my Christmas preparing. How's yours going? All ready for the big day? Crazy me, I still have to go do some more shopping tomorrow. Wish me luck!!

More Metal fun.

It was time to get the metal out again this past weekend to teach the metal embossed book. I changed it up a bit and had a student do the metal mirror at the same time. They are very similar techniques so I may combine these to workshops in the future. It was a great day with some great creating going on. Check out their wonderful work.

More metal embossing...

I had another great metal embossing workshop on Saturday with a few very creative ladies. I loved all their colour combinations and am inspired to do another mirror myself. Now to just find a little extra time to do it!

What do you think? Isn't their work awesome! What's your favourite metal colour combination?

If you're looking for something creative to do next month there is still a few spots left in the Grid Texture Canvas and Metal Embossed Book workshops.

Get Creative!
