Do you make and send your own Christmas cards?</span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">Well I guess you know I am. Some of my cards get sold and some go to friends and family. But I am never very good at doing it early. Often the start of December sees me just starting to make my seasonal cards.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">Each year I do a variety of cards, some designs similar to previous years and some new designs. I often have a design that becomes my favourite to play with for that year. This year I have been playing with a forest background done with Distress inks and Oxides. It's a fun and versatile background to make a variety of cards.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">Since I've finally been able to get back at teaching in the studio this year I've scheduled a few workshops with this technique. I can't wait to see what new twists my students will do with it.</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4FGqLeC60YZxdFRn-ZAdTUiTN7oBURpjEu1yUk2WY6qCqCKc8tMw27U1DemhcsDYCrElMyhDTvsln8AutzN0l9jon1XIvFPcGiLsWElnpysnDF-HJhW6DslW32nz7ezx10TGcqnEOLtQXfV2F7cuPfu3zVRx8Lkt65M-QetpZi7IpJLyr302xeDk9/s2360/forest%20cards2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2040" data-original-width="2360" height="277" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4FGqLeC60YZxdFRn-ZAdTUiTN7oBURpjEu1yUk2WY6qCqCKc8tMw27U1DemhcsDYCrElMyhDTvsln8AutzN0l9jon1XIvFPcGiLsWElnpysnDF-HJhW6DslW32nz7ezx10TGcqnEOLtQXfV2F7cuPfu3zVRx8Lkt65M-QetpZi7IpJLyr302xeDk9/s320/forest%20cards2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyF1sfcLF5a0GwPHlFXka9jDBUaLvpaIALDUt1dzpd-llr7LtT-tOZTIvPZzbAXHeOLzWqVu6_Av6QtO86YDh0gkuxq_G_PFwsmf6kYnJJao2Si8C7ph4gw0nWKCUgwr7S0HEjvV-jSarmCZs5CXFAvyKeLOE8DfbAiiBsudUXgVC-Omt6UGt0Ru6H/s2076/tree%20background.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1916" data-original-width="2076" height="295" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyF1sfcLF5a0GwPHlFXka9jDBUaLvpaIALDUt1dzpd-llr7LtT-tOZTIvPZzbAXHeOLzWqVu6_Av6QtO86YDh0gkuxq_G_PFwsmf6kYnJJao2Si8C7ph4gw0nWKCUgwr7S0HEjvV-jSarmCZs5CXFAvyKeLOE8DfbAiiBsudUXgVC-Omt6UGt0Ru6H/s320/tree%20background.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><span style="font-size: medium;">Once we learn to create this forest background we will explore some techniques using die cutting, embossing powder and a few other surprises.</span><p></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">If you've been making your own cards I hope you'll share some pics of them in the comments. It's been good to spend so much time in my art journals. I'd like to tell you that I spend some time art journaling everyday but real life just doesn't work that way. So I art journal whenever I get a chance. Sometimes it may be 5 minutes and others it may be hours. It gets whatever and whenever life allows</span></span><span style="color: #1c2b33; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, "Segoe UI", Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif, "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Symbol"; white-space: pre-wrap;">.</span></span><span style="background-color: #eeeeee; color: #1c2b33; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, "Segoe UI", Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif, "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Symbol"; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap;"> </span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYTcpWUvxgEItMsu8r8J8wX9GzeWbMlJDBNrZvLodYIvpcV0k2Cv1Ey462xNvmYEorzoBnXHxIRuOo1EfcEPz51SEJmnbLhal518Sl9eW9EiFHoWXnNYQEUSbO4M5uQdqTKbp62n4A8BT7YY-Uymz7ZQigpckrnuPF7bPccLa9YSUq1wZkCTuY5gPX/s2240/30%20ways%20list.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2240" data-original-width="1524" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYTcpWUvxgEItMsu8r8J8wX9GzeWbMlJDBNrZvLodYIvpcV0k2Cv1Ey462xNvmYEorzoBnXHxIRuOo1EfcEPz51SEJmnbLhal518Sl9eW9EiFHoWXnNYQEUSbO4M5uQdqTKbp62n4A8BT7YY-Uymz7ZQigpckrnuPF7bPccLa9YSUq1wZkCTuY5gPX/s320/30%20ways%20list.jpg" width="218" /></a></div><br /><span style="background-color: white; color: #1c2b33; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, "Segoe UI", Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif, "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Symbol"; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span><p></p><p><span style="background-color: #eeeeee; color: #1c2b33; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: medium;"> If you've followed along with my art journaling at all, you may have noticed that I don't work on one page at a time. Actually I don't even work in one journal at a time. Nor do I work from the front to back of an art journal much to the surprise of a student, I had recently, who just couldn't fathom that was a thing people did. Well yes it's a think people do. At least I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in this practice. I like to just open up to whatever page is calling me at the moment and start there or continue if the page is already started.</span></span></p><p><span style="color: #1c2b33; font-size: medium;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">This page layout was comprised of about 5 or 6 short, 5 to 15 minute sessions over about a week. In that time I probably worked on some other pages but this one kept calling and telling me what it wanted next. Sometimes that's how it works. Other times a page can take months or years before it calls me back to finish it. </span><span style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, Segoe UI, Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif, Apple Color Emoji, Segoe UI Emoji, Segoe UI Symbol;"><br /></span></span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #1c2b33; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, "Segoe UI", Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif, "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Symbol"; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBRfVR9a1R98_ptZJafXT8SBsN8snobtRaag7qhNmohJ2601fqWMS-Dwfys3FXz5jT6rNOtB5qamAdaZwYdDh8VZuEH2bF2Q7_VNOHgZCUkiCxWILANEshGgwA-zOMZHhup5HKCpgjkcgWLSdK7xvKftvxBg2wnuCuDed4-NMcnns5UuWzl7uN-aU7/s2840/wc%20in%20and%20mica%20stain.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2328" data-original-width="2840" height="262" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBRfVR9a1R98_ptZJafXT8SBsN8snobtRaag7qhNmohJ2601fqWMS-Dwfys3FXz5jT6rNOtB5qamAdaZwYdDh8VZuEH2bF2Q7_VNOHgZCUkiCxWILANEshGgwA-zOMZHhup5HKCpgjkcgWLSdK7xvKftvxBg2wnuCuDed4-NMcnns5UuWzl7uN-aU7/s320/wc%20in%20and%20mica%20stain.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Mica spray and watercolour ink</td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-family: verdana;">The first layer on the spread was just a quick splash of Cosmic Shimmer Watercolor ink and Distress Mica spray. I think for myself a lot of these processes are intuitive so I'm not really aware of some of the mechanisms of it. Stepping back and being more aware of some of the processes can actually be very helpful to me in future projects. </span></p><p><span style="background-color: #eeeeee; font-family: verdana;">One of the things I've realized I do is use small 4" x 4" paper tiles, usually a fairly heavy Brisol or Watercolour paper that can withstand anything I throw at it. <span style="color: #1c2b33; white-space: pre-wrap;">This lets me play with different techniques, mediums and colour palettes without thinking about the end product or worrying about more pricey materials that I may be thinking of for the final project. And when I am done and ready to move onto the final project, I'm more confident about where I'm going with that project and I'm left with lot's of fun background tiles that more often than not get made into cards. I sometimes use odd sizes of papers thinking they are just samples but they get tossed around and are harder to use for other projects.</span></span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyZAqG98BPgFlwPwyP6lLnt41UChhWeV4oSGYW9XFZdVXkY3gf76u7bCUofzd31-f0FYFLcE0H5W_oYs1kI64NbqRBR3FFLqxyTzm9I9d-Eqjv-goi94s6bp0EMS9qB2z9U4W3oz3cJ0w9Bmrd5ikrMQHrNxeg01BtF3j58ncM7ayHcslxl3OtzWaT/s2958/small%20krafttex%20embossed%20book.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2496" data-original-width="2958" height="338" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyZAqG98BPgFlwPwyP6lLnt41UChhWeV4oSGYW9XFZdVXkY3gf76u7bCUofzd31-f0FYFLcE0H5W_oYs1kI64NbqRBR3FFLqxyTzm9I9d-Eqjv-goi94s6bp0EMS9qB2z9U4W3oz3cJ0w9Bmrd5ikrMQHrNxeg01BtF3j58ncM7ayHcslxl3OtzWaT/w400-h338/small%20krafttex%20embossed%20book.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">French stitch binding.</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><span style="background-color: white; color: #1c2b33; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></span></p><p><span style="color: #1c2b33; font-family: verdana;"><span style="background-color: #eeeeee; white-space: pre-wrap;">I had an idea for making these books with embossing folders and Kraft-tex paper. Both products have a great metallic finish to them and both are permanent when dry. For blending colours the waxes work better. They have more open time and blend wonderfully. Since the Polishes are acrylic based they dry very quickly and don't blend well but they do layer well and are quite opaque. I found myself going back and forth with the different polish colours and loved the way I could add more colours on top of each other. Both products can be applied with a variety of tools such as fingers, brushes or small sponges. My preferred method for the waxes are small dry brushes. For the polishes the applicator that comes with it works very well.</span></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEZkDuqEPQrlFOhVPcvbhNbcFgJg-pK4DIkDYsKONKTKKwQEHL1HMEPDO7HQYdq4iKaf4oLvRjr4dsTHM4oeM2bFVrT9RuY8Fm5cjbpABcrIHCzaGZgJhdEsFXFy7EUhHvZ8vCNyrjBX6eHxjNx9G4p3-2261pUBWcyVTuJNFuIyWtXTPbh61IqTfH/s2616/wax%20and%20polish.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2344" data-original-width="2616" height="359" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEZkDuqEPQrlFOhVPcvbhNbcFgJg-pK4DIkDYsKONKTKKwQEHL1HMEPDO7HQYdq4iKaf4oLvRjr4dsTHM4oeM2bFVrT9RuY8Fm5cjbpABcrIHCzaGZgJhdEsFXFy7EUhHvZ8vCNyrjBX6eHxjNx9G4p3-2261pUBWcyVTuJNFuIyWtXTPbh61IqTfH/w400-h359/wax%20and%20polish.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Wax and Polish.</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><span style="font-family: verdana;">Well this started out as process oriented and turned into product info. I'm not a watercolour artist by any means but I do like to play with it and it sometimes finds it's way into my mixed media projects. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: medium;">So the first thing I needed to do is make a watercolour book to play in.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: medium;">I decided to try a few new things while making my book. As a carry-over from last month's theme of 'use it or lose it', I decided to do the cover with some Kraft-Tex paper that I have had for a while but haven't tried yet. <span style="background-color: white; color: #050505; white-space: pre-wrap;"> It's an interesting paper that they describe as leather like and can be sewn like fabric. I was pleased to discover that it played very well with the watercolours. </span></span></p><p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhECiCcwt1SGokAOzfGgnyfLPCiLwRIemLDpS0BQ2GqXzWn3uLKrgs7EiWZCNRDcKIbMZaH3p7iS9286lFX1sn7SNaW_gfL3kDmKTiSqPoKxnpyk3b7_HPQ6McS1KKH8b9z9bd8Qdo42m4oGLArrvhBs8ycz546JCUypB-f8Eda9g2QfPw4hwD9e53R=s2772" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2772" data-original-width="2772" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhECiCcwt1SGokAOzfGgnyfLPCiLwRIemLDpS0BQ2GqXzWn3uLKrgs7EiWZCNRDcKIbMZaH3p7iS9286lFX1sn7SNaW_gfL3kDmKTiSqPoKxnpyk3b7_HPQ6McS1KKH8b9z9bd8Qdo42m4oGLArrvhBs8ycz546JCUypB-f8Eda9g2QfPw4hwD9e53R=w400-h400" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Layer one.<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: medium;">I used Daniel Smith and Twinkling H2O watercolours. I started doing this a few years ago by having a theme each month. It doesn't mean I don't work on other project, not of this theme at the same time, but it helps to keep my mind a little more focused when there is too much going on in it, which is most of the time. If I am overwhelmed with ideas or just can't decide what to do I can think about my theme at the moment and find a small project to get me going. It's often what I work on in the evenings when I'm watching TV.</span></span></p><p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcrE6nM7JW4evlr6B8Uq6yKI7-QyJdIc4lhVo3V-bw2-oL81EzZY5C3jZo7KsFpInOuLob7USr1q5BVAOCSesfoIhGKJSb05irAAMuHo8hRTkv29PocCwwtYy5qSYyZ_BN8SfJPf_MdmQ/s2048/tree+atcs.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1610" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcrE6nM7JW4evlr6B8Uq6yKI7-QyJdIc4lhVo3V-bw2-oL81EzZY5C3jZo7KsFpInOuLob7USr1q5BVAOCSesfoIhGKJSb05irAAMuHo8hRTkv29PocCwwtYy5qSYyZ_BN8SfJPf_MdmQ/w315-h400/tree+atcs.jpg" width="315" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Dec. 2020 theme- Trees<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><span style="font-family: trebuchet;"><span style="font-size: large;">Another thing that keeps me motivated with my themes is to share with others. I've had some wood houses sitting on my work table for some time now just waiting for inspiration and/or incentive to getting going on them. Of course that's not the only kind of houses I created this month. I love the theme of houses and can't stop thinking of different kinds to do now. I think houses will keep popping up in my studio long after the theme has past. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_WsFQmtXgSjstVGMJeG8igdFHl1bVlB0mdqB_NUfAatlCL7zHPn95HkNURxstvnB1Le2yz-XYKGxto5QjzTjEQEBXvqkU7vz4OBHW_Uc5dC9UFIK1k9uehFnWYz3yP14IDqDX2PkbgZA/s2048/moss+side.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1203" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_WsFQmtXgSjstVGMJeG8igdFHl1bVlB0mdqB_NUfAatlCL7zHPn95HkNURxstvnB1Le2yz-XYKGxto5QjzTjEQEBXvqkU7vz4OBHW_Uc5dC9UFIK1k9uehFnWYz3yP14IDqDX2PkbgZA/s640/moss+side.jpg" /></a></div><span style="font-size: large;">This wood block house was nature inspired. How does that happen even in this strange time of isolation when I have no classes or creative studio and so much time at home on my own. However it happens I am sorry for not post more here. I won't promise that I will do more but I will do my best to do better. I have the best of intentions and so many ideas to share with you. I start off by doing a full sheet of collage and painting and then I cut them to the size I want before finishing them of with some mark making and doodling the back with an affirmation or quote.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqV0uuKvzyj4YD9pyL2P8QebdhOhwqi-H1rYULxgpeWMtLhwAz9enGbL7jUUvswxlPiDS0aMMZe7FCl-VILHvdjlFrH-YYl7ahlyQ4tupZbcBzZrWI_9gHmRG4jD9qmw3AUwWaGz8Ih-M/s2048/atcs+group.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1507" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqV0uuKvzyj4YD9pyL2P8QebdhOhwqi-H1rYULxgpeWMtLhwAz9enGbL7jUUvswxlPiDS0aMMZe7FCl-VILHvdjlFrH-YYl7ahlyQ4tupZbcBzZrWI_9gHmRG4jD9qmw3AUwWaGz8Ih-M/s640/atcs+group.jpg" /></a></div><span style="font-size: large;">These ATC's all got traded with people from the group.</span></div><div><br /></div><div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyvEMKm7rhhR_ZAdxPmKZHh_qUdVRgy1Vt7ruB1Cu2wFbLTjL6iHCmQmpKG5kq8FS0BMucGMuX-aqwqzoyYUEO-F1uYSES0LqGDMAEg-8pooy5PlKKjUQdWOoiRJd8ynScS2EQVqzjmoY/s2048/Find+your+balance+frontandback.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1535" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyvEMKm7rhhR_ZAdxPmKZHh_qUdVRgy1Vt7ruB1Cu2wFbLTjL6iHCmQmpKG5kq8FS0BMucGMuX-aqwqzoyYUEO-F1uYSES0LqGDMAEg-8pooy5PlKKjUQdWOoiRJd8ynScS2EQVqzjmoY/s640/Find+your+balance+frontandback.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWHxHBbrw6w1_KhvEabmQ72ll7tIjl43yrkriWtPI79vyJSRH-BrkVTv09yWB3iGlNzW5qOOTrtvx9HyWTrI-wY8Ucgli7muFS6hhbIIYlsiE5h_KA7Q9OEt9TC3VgtejYb2NaDruBJcU/s2048/Folow+your+soul+frontandback.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1551" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWHxHBbrw6w1_KhvEabmQ72ll7tIjl43yrkriWtPI79vyJSRH-BrkVTv09yWB3iGlNzW5qOOTrtvx9HyWTrI-wY8Ucgli7muFS6hhbIIYlsiE5h_KA7Q9OEt9TC3VgtejYb2NaDruBJcU/s640/Folow+your+soul+frontandback.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvU4khsR2ij1elJSJI0aACGcYXzgYEN0v-d8LLENuOtPU-TqtVq1PSoC1BJZDq34vFkDoxkeXVykwtprjvtDLSkAWqzCiCu2GYT8FC9RlbZ_ofB6l8iSEdP7w15GiMxYuB-8Flq68r0_Y/s2048/Your+Story+front+and+back.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1548" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvU4khsR2ij1elJSJI0aACGcYXzgYEN0v-d8LLENuOtPU-TqtVq1PSoC1BJZDq34vFkDoxkeXVykwtprjvtDLSkAWqzCiCu2GYT8FC9RlbZ_ofB6l8iSEdP7w15GiMxYuB-8Flq68r0_Y/s640/Your+Story+front+and+back.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-size: large;">These affirmation cards are 4.5"x3". I have been keeping busy creatively and trying some new things. </span><div>
<span style="font-size: large;"> This month I gave myself a tiny challenge. Well, at least tiny in size. I was inspired by Belinda Fireman and her <a href="http://belindafireman.com/self-love-365/" target="_blank">Self Love 365 Project</a>. She did an inchie (that's a one inch square piece of art) each day for a year. I modified mine to try it for a month and my theme was Happy Little Thoughts.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"> With just a few days left I thought I'd show you how it's going.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"> This month on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/dragonflydreamers.blogspot.ca" target="_blank">Dragonfly Dreamers Exploration group page</a> the theme is art journaling. I have been playing in art journals for 6 or 7 years now. It is probably one of my favourite things to do. There are no rules and it doesn't have to be perfect because it's just for me. I use them to experiment and try new techniques and mediums. I use them to do online class work in. I use them for doodling, drawing...well for just about anything. I have quite a few I'm working in at any given time and I often work in more than one at a time. The sizes vary from small 5"x5" handmade journals to larger 8"x12". Mostly I like to use ones with heavy watercolour paper but a few have different paper and one is all black.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"> Often when there is left over paint from other projects or students work, I slap it into a journal page without any thought as to what I will do with it. So my journals have quite a few pages in this ugly stage. Last week I asked people on my social media to choose a page for me to finish. This is the page they chose and it's journey.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgadqoRZ0vhdYJUKGw4G1T9xTWLmFRh0bzLvB8QI4WPG1PbcSU6Fi6w4R_IusODaob80cB8z1lwuk6pqpPfzlZno5JUZPflgc6fZFDPihtTaaf1tCpzD_jte8weG5VkqugdgKjw-NQqyno/s1600/chosen+one.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="964" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgadqoRZ0vhdYJUKGw4G1T9xTWLmFRh0bzLvB8QI4WPG1PbcSU6Fi6w4R_IusODaob80cB8z1lwuk6pqpPfzlZno5JUZPflgc6fZFDPihtTaaf1tCpzD_jte8weG5VkqugdgKjw-NQqyno/s400/chosen+one.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">This page was probably the nicer of the three to chose from. At this stage it's just left over paint that's been slopped on and a bit added with a stencil. I often don't have an idea when I start a page but for this one I did. I knew I wanted a kind of jungle leafy look and a face peaking out. But first I needed layers.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDk853B72vRm2M6uTMdHDQBDoz5J9_XQu2BhSYMRsItNcBpGECk4lReo0p4tK8a6CVEc2SlGSx_TAdBBlj4hVBTULiKOKX71RYJAEDF4Tbk_k1f1t4E2yji2I0JNwR2MDXjqBKIwyc5nM/s1600/choose+stencils.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1129" data-original-width="1600" height="281" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDk853B72vRm2M6uTMdHDQBDoz5J9_XQu2BhSYMRsItNcBpGECk4lReo0p4tK8a6CVEc2SlGSx_TAdBBlj4hVBTULiKOKX71RYJAEDF4Tbk_k1f1t4E2yji2I0JNwR2MDXjqBKIwyc5nM/s400/choose+stencils.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Since it already had some stenciling started it only seemed natural to keep going with more layers of stencils. This is all done with acrylic paints. It's amazing how fast doing some layers of stencils can bring the page together.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicVjNhUpI44ixoTKUzN7JMfios1ILwZRgA7a3JsPRrYwf9jVINatX6iGDUf2zasrFX6v9aPap-S1C4SKoTzf5QI2ZcCZz2R4XkUdDme2ED36wj4HFJy6X78HPtgPd8QBp8Sbdx5SgR4eQ/s1600/choose+circles.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1106" data-original-width="1600" height="276" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicVjNhUpI44ixoTKUzN7JMfios1ILwZRgA7a3JsPRrYwf9jVINatX6iGDUf2zasrFX6v9aPap-S1C4SKoTzf5QI2ZcCZz2R4XkUdDme2ED36wj4HFJy6X78HPtgPd8QBp8Sbdx5SgR4eQ/s400/choose+circles.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">After the stenciling I was drawn to the circles so I accentuated them a bit with pastels and graphite.</span></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9OvVLuuMsMAhmDPEwEDMtJV-djbZl3BmzFexkUbalIq50r-9Mxq8zKE6XD_xMkrdtfY6JwatMtXfzkS06nDQbWezmqjIKED-PvMtzskDSsErEIxrtNfwUmcJguUNi1aJbz2M5WcUg35w/s1600/choose+mark+making.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1063" data-original-width="1600" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9OvVLuuMsMAhmDPEwEDMtJV-djbZl3BmzFexkUbalIq50r-9Mxq8zKE6XD_xMkrdtfY6JwatMtXfzkS06nDQbWezmqjIKED-PvMtzskDSsErEIxrtNfwUmcJguUNi1aJbz2M5WcUg35w/s400/choose+mark+making.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">At this point I did something that I almost regretted. I took some paint and scraped it across the page here and there. I did not like this as soon as I got it on and this stuff dries fast. I quickly took a paper towel and took some off. It didn't take it all but the effect worked after all. This is the light coloured splotches(technical term) you can see. I could live with it now.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Then it was time for mark making. For this I used pastels, Marabu Art crayons and some graphite. </span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZgggRHi-gQ8mwxx7kVURW-vDAbzmi1z_2jCVCqVW_gEg1OpZ1uReiFbubwLav9Zrse5LQlK_-8OFxL3Qc9kALWZfgKTAqqOuSkmcZ4weJQA-YrTC_CVUHKX0YdbEQl91Ttm8VPDZ8V_s/s1600/choose+finished.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1103" data-original-width="1600" height="275" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZgggRHi-gQ8mwxx7kVURW-vDAbzmi1z_2jCVCqVW_gEg1OpZ1uReiFbubwLav9Zrse5LQlK_-8OFxL3Qc9kALWZfgKTAqqOuSkmcZ4weJQA-YrTC_CVUHKX0YdbEQl91Ttm8VPDZ8V_s/s400/choose+finished.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">And then there are all the details. I spent quite a while, over a few days playing with the rest. For the leaves I used mostly acrylic paint and some Posca paint pens. I used Caran D'ache Neocolor II to do some shading and blending of the background. More marks were added in spaces that needed them. It was a very fun page to do. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I hope you enjoyed hearing a bit about the process of a journal page. Are you an art journaler?</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Keep Creating!</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"> I hope in these challenging time you are finding some peace of mind in creativity. My studio has certainly been my sanctuary in the last month and I'm so grateful for it. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"> I've been playing with a lot of different things and exploring a few new ones. Although I had lots of things to do and play with I decided to give myself a challenge for the month of April. I am doing a sketch/drawing each day and posting on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/dragonflydreamers/" target="_blank">Instagram</a>. Drawing is something that I have been wanting to do more of so I thought this was a good opportunity. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-size: large;"> It's been an interesting year so far to say the least. I've been taking some time to reboot and work on some new projects over the winter and just when I am ready to get back to doing some workshops the world has turned upside down. Now it's time to rethink the next steps to take.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> Being an introvert makes the social distancing an easy thing to do for me. So I'm choosing to take advantage of my extra time alone in the studio to play and catch up on things. I hope you're able to make the best of the situation and give yourself permission to play.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"> One of the things that has kept me busy this year is my<a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/dragonflydreamers.blogspot.ca/" target="_blank"> Monthly Explorations Themes over on my FB group</a>. In January the theme was Doodling, Mark Making and Drawing. What's not to like about that!</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">In February the theme was Stencils. I love my stencils and use them often. There are so many ways to use them. Here are just a few.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Since it was February I had to do a few heart cards. I made my own heart stencil with a heart die I have and then layered other stencils on top of it for the patterns. I used Distress Inks and Oxides for the colours along with some light modeling paste and Finnabair Icing Paste for the texture through stencils.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">This page was done with a lot of layers of collage material, paints and stencils. The mushrooms were a new stencil I got recently from Stencil Girl. I used Nuvo Expanding Mousse through the stencil. This was an new product for me and I loved the way it puffs up when heated. Once dried I coloured the mushrooms with Finnabair waxes.</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"> And now in March the theme is Watercolour. This is not a medium that I play with much or know much about so it really is about exploring and learning. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"> I made myself a small book with 5.5"x5.5" watercolour paper pages to do my playing/experimenting in. It is a nice size to try out something new.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"> These little swatch doodles were inspired by a fun Canadian Artist, Cee Cee's Creations. You can find many of her videos on Youtube. They were very fun to do. I'm sure I will be doing more of them this month. </span></div>

It's always nice to have a group of friends in the studio to play. Since they hadn't done any Acrylic Pouring before we did a little exploring with Dirty Pours as well as swipes and waves. They did really well for their first time pouring. </span><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

It's actually the saying that is on the sample canvas but it is so appropriate for this workshop. The possibilities for it are endless. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> I work very intuitively when I create so I don't usually think about the specific things I use and why I'm choosing them but when it's done it usually tells a story or teaches me something. For me it's about letting go and not overthinking it.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> These students did a great job of not over thinking things and created something that is all their own.</span><br />

Have you starting your Christmas cards yet? Do you make your own cards? Do you even send out cards any more?</span><div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Well here in the studio we've been making cards like crazy. My Creative Studio Tuesday evening group has been busy with Christmas creating since the beginning of the month. This past Saturday was the Christmas Cards workshop. As with most of the workshops, once they learned the basic techniques they have an infinite number of ways to go with their cards. Just take a look at the wonderful variety they created. </span><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

I hadn't taught it in a few year so there were a few requests for it. It's one of my all time favourite workshops to teach so I was happy to be doing it again. I love the techniques with texture and all the fun combination of objects people use to finish it off. </span><br />

We spent our day creating the Black Dimensions canvas. Lot's of texture to explore and objects to choose and design with. This is such a fun canvas to do and teach. I started out doing dirty pours and thought I would never get tired of them but alas I did to some extent. I still enjoy seeing the result when you flip the dirty pour cup but I've started doing a lot more exploring with it and other techniques. And through this exploring I discovered ring pours and fun with balloons. That is what my last workshop the other day was all about. It was so much fun. Just take a look at all the variations that my students created.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"> When people come to the studio to do the Excavating Layers workshop they are expecting to make a 12" x24" canvas. But more often than not they walk away with 4 finished pieces. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"> The first time I taught this workshop, at the last minute I decided that I would have them do some practicing with the texture layers and colours on 3 small 5" x7" canvas boards. To my surprise and the students delight they worked out so well that they ended up with 4 finished pieces of art at the end of two days. Sometimes they do similar styles on all three boards and end up with a tryptic and sometimes they try a variety of styles and end up with 3 separate pieces. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"> This weekends I had two wonderfully creative students in the studio. They did a great job on all of their canvases.</span></div>

It had been way too long since I last found time to play with my gel plates. This group of ladies were wonderfully playful and creative.</span><div>
<span style="font-size: large;"> The gel plate had captivated my attention so much that I almost forgot to take pictures and when I did remember I only had time for a few. So these are mostly prints in progress. </span><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

No paper is over looked when making this little gem of a book. I scour the house for interesting paper and often students bring some of their own. There was graph paper, ledger paper, maps, copies of personal art, scrapbooking paper, envelopes, magazines, old book text, recipes...... You get the idea.<br />
<br />
Other than a break for lunch this group of creative ladies had a busy day making their books. They all turned out so unique and amazing. It just makes me want to keep making more.<br />
